From the President

Earlier this year, Temple University formally introduced its new strategic plan, Forward with Purpose. For Temple, this is more than a plan. It is our roadmap that will guide our institution through the next decade as we approach our 150th anniversary in 2034.

Built around the foundational priorities of Student Success, Research in Action and Place-based Impact, Forward with Purpose provides us with a clear direction for becoming one of the most consequential urban research universities in the nation.

We are now nearly a year into the implementation of the strategic plan, and our progress is already evident. It is reflected right here within the pages of Temple magazine.

This issue highlights some of our institution’s greatest strengths and how we are building while continuing to keep students and their success at the center of all we do.

Within these pages, you will read about Jane Creamer Sullivan, KLN ’70, a dedicated alum who is helping transform our institution. Thanks to Jane’s incredible generosity, next fall we will open the Jane Creamer Sullivan and Thomas J. Sullivan Honors College.

This won’t be just any honors college. Defined by qualities that are distinctly Temple, it will be grounded in the concepts of a flexible, place-based curriculum, access reimagined and collaboration over competition. Its establishment is also one of the best examples of our early progress in implementing Forward with Purpose.

You will also read about our growing global footprint, which is one of our strongest distinctions as an institution. This fall, our Japan campus opened a second Tokyo-area location: the Hillside Center in the central and suburban Tokyo area of Mizonokuchi, Kawasaki. Temple Rome, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, has also started offering full, four-year degree programs.

Enrollment at both Temple Japan and Temple Rome is on the rise, and we are delighted that we can help prepare our students to succeed in an increasingly interconnected world.
